The "HPCGG Explore Genetics" program is a summer educational experience for selected rising high school seniors. This one-week program combines didactics and hands-on activities to create an innovative way to enrich the lives of students by introducing them to the exciting and rapidly evolving field of genetics and genomics.
Didactic Lectures
Gain a broad understanding of genetics through lectures on topics including "Genetics and Genomics in Clinical Practice" and "Genomic Research: Current Areas of Rapid Development."
Group Project
Work in small groups to gain in depth knowledge about a selected genetic disease-from the clinical findings and their impact on affected individuals to the genetic testing and implications of positive results. Create a unique audiovisual teaching tool to demonstrate your understanding of this disease.
Laboratory Activities Lab Tours-View lab facilities, learn how they operate and are used in genetic research and clinical diagnostics.
DNA Extraction-Work through the steps of DNA extraction on your own saliva.
Lab Personnel Shadowing-Follow individuals working in a DNA diagnostics laboratory through the steps of sample preparation, analysis and interpretation of results.
Program will run 9:00-4:30 M-Th, 9:00-2:30 on Friday.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation.
Lunch will be provided.
